Charles Okah Has Not Escaped From Prison - Nigerian Prisons Service

The Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) has refuted reports in a section of the media that a brother of Henry Okah, jailed leader of the Movement For The Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) Charles Okah has escaped from Kuje Prison in Abuja.

The Public Relations Officer of the Service, Francis Enobore told Daily Trust on the phone that he was in touch with his men on ground after the rumour filtered in but there was no truth in the story.

"It is not true, Charlse Okah is still in custody. I have been in touch with our men in the prison facility and there is nothing like that [Okah escaping]," Enobore said.

Saharareporters had reported earlier in the day that a prison inmate informed the medium that Mr. Okah, who had been on trial in Abuja for the 2010 Independence Day bombing that killed 27 people, escaped last night by simply scaling the prison walls of the prison around 7:30 PMNigerian time.

The online medium claimed he escaped in the company of another prison inmate, adding that a massive manhunt had commenced to find and rearrest him.
