A man identified as Doctor Kayode was killed on Monday, 18th, following a fatal accident along First Bank road in Okigwe area of Imo state. The deceased was reportedly knocked down by a reckless driver along the road as he was rushed to the hospital where he gave up the ghost. May his gentle soul rest in peace. Ameen. 

Sad! All Passengers Dead After Commercial Bus Hits A Truck Along Lagos-Benin Highway (Photos)

This is very sad. While people are preparing earnestly for the Christmas Festivity, comes this tragedy which has left some families in a mourning mood. According to reports, a fatal accident was recorded on Monday, December 18 after a commercial bus filled with passengers hit a truck along the Lagos-Ore-Benin expressway.

All most all passengers in the accident died in the crash including a woman and her three children who were travelling. According to a witness Miz’ta Emmy, only the driver survived the fatal accident.

The sad incident caused a huge traffic gridlock in the area as their corpses were evacuated.

Donald Trump Banned From Entering UK Town

Donald Trump has been banned from entering the United Kingdom town of Greenwich by the Councillors.

Reuters reports that the Councillors in Greenwich, have voted to bar Trump from the borough ahead of his proposed state visit.

The Labour-run council called on the Government to abandon its plans to host the President in the new year.

Greenwich Council said that it had adopted a motion for the state visit not to go ahead, and that “should a state visit go ahead, President Trump would not be welcome in the Borough.”

The council expressed “alarm at the decision of President Trump to retweet islamophobic propaganda” and showed “sadness at the President’s bigoted attitude towards women and ethnic minorities.”

The leader of the council, Councillor Denise Hyland, said, “On a daily basis we work hand in hand with residents from all communities to ensure this borough is a peaceful and welcoming place that celebrates difference and diversity, but in the case of President Trump we are willing to make an exception.

“We are one of 32 London boroughs, all different, all individual but all home to people from across the world.

“This diversity strengthens our borough. It enriches our lives on a daily basis. And it reminds us all that we have so much more in common than divides us.

“As one of the most multi-cultural London boroughs, we are a place that has worked tirelessly to break down barriers. We have no time for people who want to build walls, when we have done so much to break them down.”

Man Who Raped His 10-Year-Old Daughter Sentenced To 18 Years In Jail, 10 Strokes Of Cane

A trader was sentenced to 18 years’ jail and 10 strokes last Friday in Malaysia, for raping his 10-year-old daughter last September.

Sessions Court judge Ahmad Bazli Bahruddin imposed the sentence after the 50-year-old pleaded guilty.

The judge ordered the sentence to begin from Oct 13, the date he was arrested.

The father of eight was alleged to have raped his daughter, then aged 10 years and four months, at an unnumbered house in Beris Kubur Besar, Bachok, between 9.30pm and 11.15 pm on Sept 22.

According to the facts, the accused had gone to his ex-wife’s house to fetch the victim to stay at his home before the incident happened but the victim refused to follow him.

However, after she was coaxed by her mother, she agreed to follow her father. About 11.30pm, when the victim was sent home by her sister, her mother noticed she was behaving differently and questioned her.

The victim then told her mother that she had been raped and that this was not the first time.
On Oct 12, the father went to the victim’s house again and wanted to take her to his house, but the mother refused to allow him to take the girl.

The mother then lodged a police report.
Deputy public prosecutor Siti Hajar Alias prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.

Update: 76-Year-Old Kidnapped Hypertensive Victim Dies After Rescue Operation

The victim, Benjamin Okoye,  who was kidnapped on the 15th and rescued on December 18th after the IRT men smashed the kidnapping gang and grabbed six suspects, died later. Items recovered from the suspects are two AK47 rifles and six magazines loaded with 180 rounds of live ammunition in Abia State. 

The victim was a major importer and a businessman in Aba but said to be an indigene of Anambra State. A police source said: “The IRT operatives were instructed by the IG, Ibrahim Idris, to take over the case.

The camp is a threebedroom house, rented and used for camping abducted victims. The operatives raided the camp and rescued the ailing Okoye. He is a hypertensive patient that had been held captive with his medicine.

He was rescued and four other kidnappers were arrested at the camp. These four suspects challenged the police teams to a gun battle, leading to them sustaining bullet wounds.” The suspects, who are presently in police custody, are Chinonye Anoro (26) and Prince Sylvester 35, owner and driver of the operational bus. The bus had been used for eight operations in Aba. Others are Kingsley Papa (45), Ugbonabo Danjuma (43), who is the gang leader, Moses Clever (31) and Ogoro James (26). The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Anthony Ogbizi, yesterday announced that Okoye later died after being rescued. Parading the suspects, Ogbizi announced that he got a report that the victim had just died.

Physically Challenged Beggar Arrested With Guns In Lagos .

The officials of Lagos Police Command have arrested a disabled beggar operating in Egbeda area of Lagos.

The suspect, Godwin Fawehinmi was caught in possession of a gun and upon investigation, police recovered more guns from his house at Alhaji Sadiku street in Akowonjo area of Egbeda.

Fawehinmi who is yet to tell police what he was doing with the weapons, has been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) office for further investigation.

The suspect, who is crippled, it was learnt, usually begs for alms on the street on a daily basis. However, it came to many as a surprise when a gun was recovered from him.

A source said some residents of the area where the man usually sits to beg for alms, noticed different people that visit him on a daily basis, look suspicious. That was why they informed the police.

A police source said Fawehinmi might be keeping the gun for some armed robbers and pretended to be a beggar.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Chike Oti, confirmed Fawehinmi’s arrest. He said: “The operatives of the command went after him, conducted search in his house and premises and recovered different types of guns, axes, machetes and other weapons. Investigation is still on-going.”

At least 'six people' have been killed after a high-speed train derailed off a bridge and onto a packed highway in Washington.

Authorities confirmed there have been a 'number of fatalities' after the train crashed in Dupont as it travelled between Seattle and Portland in rush hour, at around 7.45am local time.

US media reports suggest that the majority of travellers - more than 70 of 77 passengers and five crew on board - have been transferred to hospital with "major injuries". Emergency services battled to rescue several trapped on carriages.

Dramatic pictures from the scene show part of the train hanging from a bridge onto Interstate 5 where it struck vehicles - but no motorists were killed in the crash, it's reported.

Train 501 which crashed is now known to have been travelling the route for the first time.

It's since emerged there were warnings that there would a fatal accident involving high-speed trains by the local mayor just a fortnight ago.

It's still unclear what caused the derailment - but there is speculation that the train 'hit something at 81mph'.

Appeal Court Affirms Ex-Banker's 19-Year-Old Jail Sentence

The Kaduna Division of the Court of Appeal on Monday, December 18, upheld the judgment of the Kano State High Court which convicted and sentenced a former bank manager, Samuel Owoleye, to 19 years' imprisonment sometime in 2012.

Owoyele, a manager at the Union Bank Branch, Bank Road, Kano was prosecuted by the commission for offenses bordering on Obtaining by False Pretence.

On the 20th day of June, 2012, the Kano State High Court presided over by Justice Dije Abdu Aboki found the accused person guilty on the three count charge that was preferred against him and convicted him accordingly.

The appellant was subsequently sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on count one, and 7 years imprisonment on count 2 without option of fine. However, on count three, he was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment with option of N300,000 fine.

While the sentence in count one and two were to run concurrently, the appellant was to serve consecutive sentence in count three.

Trouble started for Owoyele on when the commission received a petition  from one Ashiru Munzali Gambo  that the convict obtained the sum N27million under the pretext that he had $185,000 to sell to him.

Nigerian Startup Invents App That Can Diagnose Asphyxia By Analyzing Babies’ Cry

A Nigerian startup has developed a machine learning system to detect child birth asphyxia earlier and hopes to save thousands of babies’ lives every year when its technology is deployed.

The founders say the AI solution has achieved over 95% prediction accuracy in trials with nearly 1,400 pre-recorded baby cries. The startup is now raising funds to acquire more data to improve accuracy and obtain clinical approval from health institutions.

The young startup is already garnering international attention and is in the final round for the global IBM Watson AI XPRIZE competition, which has a $5 million prize.

Birth asphyxia is the third highest cause of under-five child deaths and is responsible for almost one million neonatal deaths annually, according to WHO. It has also been linked to 1.1 million intrapartum stillbirths, long-term neurological disability and impairment.

Charles Onu, Ubenwa’s founder and principal innovator, explained that the startup’s machine learning system takes an infant’s cry as input, analyses the amplitude and frequency patterns of the cry and provides instant diagnosis of birth asphyxia.

Although the condition is detectable, Onu said few public hospital in the country had the equipment due to its high cost, poor electricity service and an unrealistic routine application for every child.

Ubenwa’s co-founder and engineering lead, Udeogu Innocent, said after being able to achieve a level of success with the model, the startup then deployed its technology to a mobile app for easier mobile diagnosis of birth asphyxia. It builds on techniques that have been developed for speech recognition.

The Ubenwa team is conducting clinical validation exercises in Nigeria at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital and in Canada at the McGill University Health Centre.
