Unbelievable! Serving NYSC Member Allegedly R*pes Student In Katsina State

A serving member of the NYSC has been nabbed for allegedly forcing himself on a student in the school he teaches.

The NYSC spokesman in the state, Mr. Alex Oboaemeta, however, denied the allegation, saying investigation was ongoing into the incident.

According to Punch Metro, the police in Katsina on Tuesday arrested and detained a member of the National Youth Service Corps in Katsina for allegedly raping a student in the secondary school where was posted for his primary assignment.

The corps member, whose identity was not revealed, is being detained at the Sabon-Garin Police Station, Katsina.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Katsina State, SP Gambo Isah, confirmed the incident.

He said, “Yes, the boy has been arrested. But we are awaiting the medical report to firmly establish the allegation.”

It was alleged that the victim, a Junior Secondary School 1 pupil at the Government Girls Secondary School, Katsina, made the allegation against the corps member, leading to his arrest.

Punch Metro was told that the pupil alleged that the corps member committed the act when she visited him at the residence the school provided for serving corps members in the community.

Sources further revealed that the school management and the NYSC authorities met on Monday to discuss the issue before the police were invited on Tuesday.

Scientists in Australia have become the first to recreate the new coronavirus outside of China in what they have called a "significant breakthrough".

The discovery will be shared with the World Health Organization (WHO) in the hope it may help efforts to diagnose and treat the virus.

Scientists in China have also recreated the virus and shared its genome sequence, but not the virus itself.

The outbreak has killed 132 people in China and infected close to 6,000.

There are at least 47 cases confirmed in 16 other countries, including in Thailand, France, the US and Australia. No deaths have been reported outside China.

Researchers at a specialist lab in Melbourne, Australia, said they were able to grow a copy of the virus from an infected patient. The sample was sent to them last Friday.

"We've planned for an incident like this for many, many years and that's really why we were able to get an answer so quickly," said Dr Mike Catton of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity.

21-Year-Old Kenyan Man Commits Suicide In Police Cell

A family in Nkoben, Narok County, Kenya is mourning their kin who allegedly committed suicide in a police cell.

Vincent Kiplang’at, 21, had been arrested on Thursday last week and put in Lolung’a police station after he allegedly assaulted his wife.

According to his father, David Mutai, the deceased was to be arraigned in a Narok Court on Monday, January 27, but instead he was informed of his death on Sunday.

Mutai said he was called by police officers who informed him that his son had committed suicide by hanging himself using a blanket at the wee hours of the night.

“The deceased had been arrested at Longisa trading center after he was involved in domestic violence with his wife who was demanding separation and division of property,” said Mr Mutai.

Now the family wants the police to carry out investigations on the matter saying the nature of death of their son is questionable.

“What is more worrying is why the police officers on duty did not notice such an attempt of suicide. This is very disturbing and we want a proper probe on the matter,” said Mutai.

He said that the family could not afford Sh30,000 needed for a post-mortem to be carried out on Kiplang’at’s body.

“We are calling on experts to help us get to the root cause of the death. We are still in shock and do not understand the sudden turn of events.

Confirming the incident, Narok South Sub County Police Commander Ezekiel Kiiche said the deceased had a history of violence and mental sickness which could have led to his death.

“We have realized that the young man had a history of violence and mental illness. During the day of arrest, he was very violent and spoke as if he suffered a mental illness,” Kiiche explained.

Fifteen people have died in an accident that occurred on the Omen bridge along the Ijebu-Ode/Ibadan highway.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed this on Tuesday.

Also, according to him, 38 others were injured in the accident, while 12 others were unhurt.

Akinbiyi explained that the accident involved only one vehicle a Mitsubishi Canter, marked XE-331-MKA with 65 occupants.

He said the vehicle fell into a ditch as a result of over-speeding and recklessness, while the driver was trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

“The dead bodies were recovered from the ditch, where the vehicle crashed and later to Sabo following the request of the Hausa community, while the injured victims have been taken to the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode,” Akinbiyi said.

Sad! Woman Flees After Dumping Newborn Baby

According to a report by Punch Metro, a yet-to-be-identified woman, on Tuesday, dumped a two-day-old baby girl on the road opposite the Central Mosque in Minna, Niger State.

It was gathered that after dumping the baby, the woman mounted the motorcycle that brought her to the area and fled the scene, where the baby was discovered.

It was learnt that some children, who were playing around the scene of the incident, saw the woman when she dumped the baby.

The children were said to have alerted their parents and a woman, Fatima Adamu, rescued the baby and took her to the Niger State Child Right Protection Agency.


Adamu said people were scared of moving closer to the baby after they were informed that a woman dumped her, adding that she sought the intervention of a vigilante in the area to pick up the baby and take her to the police station.

She stated, “My neighbours called me to the scene and when I got there, I saw people gathered around the area, where the baby was dumped. I was told that an unknown woman, who disembarked from a motorcycle, dumped the baby and fled on the same motorcycle.

“I noticed that everybody was afraid to touch the baby, because the little children playing outside the house were the ones who saw the woman when she disembarked from the motorcycle and dumped the baby. When the children saw that a baby was moving, they immediately informed their parents and neighbours, and everyone rushed to the scene.”

She explained that she sought the assistance of a member of the vigilante corps to pick up the baby and reported the matter at the Central Police Station, Minna.

A police officer on duty attended to Adamu and the vigilante at the station and assisted in bathing the baby after discovering that she was newly born.

Speaking to Northern City News, the police officer said, “When they came to the station with the baby, I noticed she was not bathed after birth. It was as if the mother just gave birth to the baby and immediately dumped her.

“I pleaded with a woman that lives close to the station to assist me with hot water and I bathed the baby. The baby was left in cold and was not doing well. I had to take her to the hospital on Sunday.

“The baby was under my care since Saturday night that she was brought to the station before we took her to the Child Right Agency.”

The Director-General, Niger State Children Right Protection Agency, Mariam Kolo, said, “We are calling on anyone, especially those living around the area, who know of any woman who was pregnant and was delivered of a baby within the last three days and hasn’t been seen with a baby to report to our agency.”

Kolo expressed gratitude to the good Samaritan and promised to work with relevant government agencies to give the child the best of care.
